California Nursery Conference
The California Nursery Conference will take place on October 15 -16, 2024 at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville, CA. Ten new UC Cooperative Extension Environmental Horticulture Advisors will be introduced, and they will share information about their research and extension programs. Demonstrations of methods to help manage plant nutrition, irrigation, diseases, and pests will be discussed during lunch. The afternoon will focus on the State Water Resources Control Board’s Irrigation and Nitrogen Management Plan program and how it affects nursery and greenhouse growers. The conference offers a packed program with information that we hope will help you as nursery and greenhouse growers.
This conference is organized by the University of California Nursery and Floriculture Alliance (UCNFA) and the Western Region of the International Plant Propagators’ Society and is co-sponsored by the Plant California Alliance. Ask the Advisor Series Panel Discussion: Managing Controlled Release Fertilizers
Are you a grower of greenhouse and nursery crops? If so, join us for a panel Q & A discussion where Dr. Don Merhaut, Dr. Bruno Pitton and Grant Johnson will offer tips and respond to questions about how to manage controlled release fertilizer in nursery production. In this session, the importance of temperature and placement in the release of nutrients from the fertilizer prills will be covered. Also, a case study focused on mechanical incorporation of controlled release fertilizer in nursery substrate will be reviewed.

Panelists
Dr. Don Merhaut, extension specialist for nursery and floriculture crops, UC Riverside. Don specializes in plant nutrition, woody ornamentals, floriculture, and blueberry production. Don Merhaut is a specialist for the ornamental, floriculture, landscape and nursery industries.
Dr. Bruno Pitton, University of California Cooperative Extension environmental horticulture advisor for Placer and Nevada Counties. Previously, he worked in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of California in Davis, administering a grant-funded research and extension program for California’s nursery and greenhouse industry.
Grant Johnson, urban agriculture technology advisor for Orange and Los Angeles Counties providing impartial, research-driven insights to optimize plant production in urban environments. With a focus on indoor production, such as greenhouses, his diverse clientele includes nurseries, commercial growers, school districts, and community gardens. In his dynamic role, he actively shapes the future of urban agriculture by tackling challenges of how to improve local food production.
Program
The program will begin with brief presentations from the panelists regarding their work on controlled release fertilizer properties and best management practices. The panelists will then take questions from participants and offer advice on best management practices to achieve the best plant production and quality without impacting the environment.
